Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly affects aging men. It is one of the leading causes of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in men over 50.

Overview

  • Prostate location:Surrounds the urethra just below the bladder.
  • As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms.
  • Not a precursor to prostate cancer, but the two can coexist.

These symptoms overlap with LUTS and are classified as:

  • Weak or interrupted stream
  • Prolonged urination
  • Incomplete bladder emptying

Storage (Irritative) Symptoms
